On the one hand, he accomplished the task of narrow passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the eventual passage of the 1966 Voting Rights Act, after much delay and compromise. But the White House soon found itself under fire when in 1964, the Peoples Republic of China detonated its first Atomic Bomb. In 1588 Elizabeths protestant throne was saved by Sir Francis Drake,a symbol of English nonchalance and cunning in the face of danger. Unrecognized heroics are finally acknowledged in "Drake Saves England".In 1962 the formation of the United West African Republic (UWAR) was announced on this day by the Heads of State for the Republics of Mali and Ghana who had recently agreed upon a rotating Presidency formula. It was the beginning of a two-month drama which would end with his conviction in the Louisiana Senate by a single vote after the failure of an effort to derail the impeachment by obtaining sworn statements from one-third of the body?s members saying that they would vote to acquit regardless because the charges themselves were unconstitutional. The Governor of Louisiana leaves office in "the Kingfish Impeached".In 1912 on this day Serbia refuses to yield in Albania. With the growth of nationalism in the course of the nineteenth century, ancient empires began to split along the seams of peoples that had been stitched together by rule of force for centuries. By 1647 things looked quite bleak for the settlements of the Dutch West India Companys settlements in North America. New Amsterdam, the companys most important trade centre, was lost to the English in 1665 and it was a bold stroke that the Dutch naval captain Jurriaen Aernoutsz captured the French settlements of Acadia along the Kennebec River during the Franco-Dutch War of 1674.This post was written by Dirk Puehl the highly recommended author of #onthisday #history Google+ posts. The Foundation of "Nieuw Zwolle" and the Republic of New HollandIn 2010 on this day director Zach Snyders alternative superhero movie American Flagg premiered in cinema theatres across North America.
