| US President | In 1836, New Hampshire's Daniel Webster is proposed as a candidate for President by members of the Federalist Party in Congress. The Federalists, whose power has diminished considerably since the days of President Hamilton, hope to regain their former prominence by placing one of their own in the presidency once more. The Whig Party will put forward John Calhoun of South Carolina. Both men are serving in the Senate, but have agreed to leave their seats to become eligible for the presidency, as required under the Constitution's provision that no member of Congress, which elects the president, can be a candidate for that office. The legislatures of their home states will name replacements. |
