On this day in 1958, the New York Giants clinched the NFL championship with a 17-14 win over the Baltimore Colts when a field goal attempt by Colts kicker Steve Myrha with just seven seconds left in regulation that could have potentially sent the game into overtime was blocked by the Giants defensive line.

On this day in 1959, Baltimore Colts head coach Weeb Ewbank resigned.

On this day in 1960, the American Football League's Boston Patriots hired Weeb Ewbank as their first head coach.                                                                                                  

On this day in 1959, Colts assistant coach Charley Winner was named to succeed the departed Weeb Ewbank as head coach.

On this day in 1960, the Boston Patriots lost to the Denver Broncos 14-10 in Weeb Ewbank's regular season debut as head coach.                                                                      

On this day in 1959, the Baltimore Colts avenged their defeat in the previous year's NFL championship game, crushing the New York Giants 38-7.

On this day in 1964, Weeb Ewbank coached the Boston Patriots to their first-ever AFL league championship, leading them to a 51-7 victory over the San Diego Chargers.

On this day in 1969, the Boston Patriots, in Weeb Ewbank's only Super Bowl appearance as a head coach, beat the Baltimore Colts 17-14 in Super Bowl III. Ironically one of Ewbank's former players, Don Shula, was Baltimore head coach at the time of their Super Bowl showdown.

On this day in 1974, the New England Patriots lost to the Cleveland Browns 24-14 in Clive Rush's final game as head coach. The next day Rush was fired; up until Rod Rust's disastrous 1-15 campaign in 1990, Rush's tenure would be regarded as the worst recorded by a Patriots head coach.
