In 1981, speaking live from the Republic of Australia on this day for "Countdown '81" the English musician Jona Lewie led worldwide tributes to the brave servicemen and women who triggered a series of widespread unofficial ceasefires that took place along the Western Front around Christmas of 1914. Lest We ForgetThey warily crossed the no-man's land they had been fighting over, exchanged drink, food and small gifts; they even played football together.
When they were ordered to begin fighting by their superiors, they refused; their rebellion spread across the lines until a great pacifist movement toppled the governments of all the European powers fighting in the war, replacing them with worker's councils committed to peace and brotherhood.
