It would be easy to read this as casting "Barack X" as the leader of a left-wing revolution which had established a totalitarian Islamic state and declared the members of the former government "criminals." Of course, how we could have gotten to such an alternative present is difficult to see, especially since "our" Barack Obama is not a Muslim and, even if he were, there aren't that many Muslims in this country--certainly not enough to take over the USA, at gunpoint or otherwise, in any scenario I can easily imagine. I had the same problem with an old Omni magazine story, "Some of My Best Friends Are Americans," which posited a near-future Arab-Islamic takeover of the U.S. That story played off the 1970s oil shocks, but even with oil as a political weapon on the Arab/Muslim side, I just couldn't see the U.S. being subjugated in this way.
