In 1864,on this day a Confederate relief force was sent to assist the Republic of Texas suppress the Cherokee panhandle rebellion.
Cherokee Panhandle Rebellion by Ed and Jeff ProvineCommander P.G.T. Beauregard was a veteran General of the States War. That conflict had ended in stalemate after the Border States seceded. And inevitably the successor states in the South were now facing their own challenge to maintain territorial integrity. The creation of an Independent Texas had caused border issues with Indian Territory out in the panhandle which was a legal/geographic mess in its own as many of the Cherokee had refused to join the Confederacy.
