Pope

In 1981, Pope John Paul II was shot and mortally wounded by Turkish extremist Mehmet Ali Agca. He would die the following day despite heroic efforts by doctors.

Conspiracy theorists would blame the Pope's murder on communists, and particularly on the Bulgarian secret police, and would attempt to tie the killing to the unsuccessful attempt on the life of President Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley six weeks earlier.
