Todayinah Editor Editor says, what if the early Church had set out to protect the primacy of man more forthrightly? Please note that the opinions expressed in this post do not necessarily reflect the views of the author(s).

The Gospel of Philip, 3rd century AD:

The companion of the Saviour is Mary Magdalene. Christ loved her more than all the disciples and used to kiss her often on the mouth. The rest of the disciples were offended by it. They said to him, "Why do you love her more than all of us?"
The Saviour answered and said to them "Why do I not love you like her? When a blind man and one who sees are both together in darkness, they are no different from one another. When the light comes, then he who sees will see the light, and he who is blind will remain in darkness".

In AD 33, on this day the rudderless, oarless death trap of a boat provided by the fisherman Simon Peter finally sunk, casting the black African woman known as Mary Magdalene and her unborn child into the Mediterranean Sea to perish along with her young maid Sarah.

Tower of the FlockUndisturbed by the screams of her younger companion, emboldened by towering faith, she remained calm as the Risen Jesus appeared. As she always knew that he would from the very moment that she first saw the treacherous condition of the boat.

Walking across the sea water to rescue the drowning Ethiopians, he carried them safely to the Port of Alexandria where they stayed for awhile, at home at last in North Africa.

Much later, in a dream, Our Lord would speak to his "Apostle of Apostles". And the companions would undertake another epic journey to Southern France where they would set down the Gospel according to Mary Magadelene containing the unique secrets entrusted to her alone. A testament to the humanistic, individualized philosophy that they had nurtured together as husband and wife during the Ministry.

Meanwhile, another account was being set down in the Holy Land, it began "You are Peter and upon this rock I will found my church."..

Todayinah Editor Editor says, in the gnostic gospels it was suggested that Mary Magdalene was the "Apostle of Apostles" and that her name meant "Tower of the Flock"

Readers Comment Robbie Taylor commented on 2011-05-09 04:22:04 ~ Two competing Christian churches - one based in Gaul, the other on Rome. Which will survive? The one based on the heir to the church's founder, or the one based in lies?

Readers Comment Jared Myers commented on 2011-05-09 06:20:34 ~ Good article, definitely a BIG what-might-have-been. The reason this IS alternate history is because the Gnostic gospels are a joke and a fraud put together (sorry, that's my History Major talking, lol). Though I will say the Gnostics made Dan Brown a lot of $$$.....

Readers Comment Stan Brin commented on 2011-05-09 06:20:34 ~ There are three Marys in the NT. As Mary was not the most common name at the time, we are required to ask, were they were the same person? And was that person Jesus' wife? As a Pharasee, Jesus would have had to have been married in order to gain the respect of his followers.

Readers Comment Jeff Provine commented on 2011-05-09 18:04:34 ~ What if there were three churches: Peter's in Antioch/Jerusalem, Paul's in Rome/Greece, and Mary Magdalene in North Africa? Might've been enough to undermine Constantine.

Readers Comment H. Torrance Griffin commented on 2011-05-09 18:39:11 ~ I suspect that Christiandom will fissure outrightvery quickly if/when the Romans adopt any particular version as the Official Church.

Readers Comment Richard Roper commented on 2012-05-08 19:16:15 ~ \so Mary of Magdela was supposed to be Ethiopean and Rachel her servant and not her child? The question I see has been raised, why so many Marys in the Gospel and it is likely Mary of Magdela was Jesus' wife or lover. But he was NOT a Pharasee, he was a Doctor of Law - leading theologian - and founded anopposing party - hence the run-ins with the Pharasees. But did she make it not to Gaul but Britannia and Avalon?

Readers Comment Jackie Rose commented on 2013-05-08 13:52:06 ~ Being Ethiopian was very high status at the time. The Odyssey starts with the Greek gods planning a trip to Ethiopia, to enjoy all the rich sacrifices there, and the Kings of Ethiopia claim descent from Solomon. Race was not a big deal.
