Editor says, a little known fact revealed in Martin Gilbert's "The Story of Israel" is that Yigal Amir planned to assassinate the Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on two previous attempts. In this post we imagine that in the first attempt he was able to try and failed. As a consequence of this earlier failure Rabin survived to keep the peace process on track. The conspiracy theory that Shimon Peres orchestrated the assassination is discussed in the Israeli Insider. Please note that the viewpoints expressed in this post do not necessarily reflect the author's own opinions.
Editor says, as a result of the Beit Lid massacre, Rabin cancelled his engagement. The notion that Shimon Peres changed his mind is a fictional device to service the literary needs of this post. Yigal Amir was waiting for him at the memorial and in fact the real assassination was his third attempt on Rabin, with crowds preventing him from shooting the Prime Minister. The quote from Amir is real but repeated out of context. The "Iron Fist" Policy is most directly associated with Ariel Sharon and his 1982 invasion of Lebanon.
