In 1000 Post-Creation, Gabriel visits Lucifer in Heaven. Lucifer was seated, watching, as he usually did in his time off, the stars. His beautiful face shone with a great light, showing the joy he felt at the moment. When he heard Gabriel approach, he turned his gaze and his light dimmed slightly. 'Gabriel, blessings be upon you.' | Author |

In 1969, chaos ensued during the Rolling Stone's performance of Sympathy for the Devil at the Altamont Free Concert in Northern California. Click

Sympathy for the DevilA possessed fan, Meredith Hunter, shot Mick Jagger dead and was himself killed when a Hells Angel (pictured) stabbed him to death.
Over the years, there were rumors that a second, unidentified assailant had inflicted the fatal wounds, and, as a result, the police considered the case still open. On May 25, 2005, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office announced that it was officially closing the stabbing case. Investigators, concluding a renewed two-year investigation, dismissed the theory that a second Hells Angel took part in the stabbing
The Angels who had been acting as security guards had strongly advised the band that the Father would object to the implied disrespect of the song and therefore could not guarantee their personal safety.
There is a short documentary film by Sam Green titled, Lot 63, Grave C (Jagger's gravesite), which sheds more light upon the lead singer's last day and the questions that remain. Click
to watch the highlights.
Much of the film chronicles the behind-the-scenes dealmaking that took place to make the free Altamont concert happen. The action then turns on the concert itself at the Altamont Speedway, the security for which was provided by the Hells Angels. As the day progressed, with drug-taking and drinking by the Angels and members of the audience, the mood turned ugly. Fights broke out during performances by The Flying Burrito Brothers and Jefferson Airplane. At one point Jefferson Airplane lead singer Marty Balin was knocked out by a Hells Angel. The Grateful Dead opted not to play after learning of the incident with Balin. By the time the Stones hit the stage, the crowd was especially restless.
The Stones opened with Jumpin' Jack Flash. It was near the end of their set, during Under My Thumb, that a member of the audience, 18 year old Meredith Hunter, pulled out a revolver in the course of a melee near the stage, and was stabbed to death by a member of the Angels after killing Jagger.
The late Baird Bryant, one of the many cameramen in the film, caught Meredith Hunter's stabbing on film. The film sequence clearly shows the silhouette of a handgun in Hunter's hand as a member of the Hells Angels enters from the right, grabs and raises the gun hand, turning Hunter around and stabbing him at least twice in the back before pushing the victim off camera.
Amongst the camera operators for the Altamont concert was a young George Lucas, who went on to become a successful film director in his own right. At the concert his camera jammed after shooting about 100 feet (30 m) of film, and none of his footage was incorporated in the final cut.

In 1914, on this day the British Army begans the withdrawal from the Battle of Mons.
Crowley's Miracle at Mons
It was in the period of this hectic retreat, when the British troops would have been so vulnerable to a pursuing enemy, that something extraordinary occurred. British troops claimed that they had seen an apparition in the sky of an angelic figure who appeared to ward off the attacks of the enemy. The retreat was successfully accomplished and the British troops lived to fight another day.
The story of the Angel at Mons spread like wildfire through Britain. It became the subject of many articles and even artistic productions. After the war, Harold Begbie published a book on the phenomenon, "On the Side of the Angels", in which he quoted some who had witnessed the apparition first-hand. One lance-corporal recalled:
"I could see quite plainly in mid-air a strange light which seemed to be quite distinctly outlined and was not a reflection of the moon, nor were there any clouds in the neighbourhood. The light became brighter and I could see quite distinctly a shape having what looked like outspread wings. The Angel appeared to have a long loose-hanging garment of a golden tint they was above the German line facing us".
Yet the Angel of Mons was in fact the entity known as Aiwass, summoned by Aleister Crowley at the request of a desperate British Government.

DVD Times reports - Ealing's film of Nicholas Monserrat's bestseller The Cruel Sea was a massive commercial success in 1952/53 and provided a valuable reminder, amidst talk of a new Elizabethan era and nostalgia for the finest hour, of the horror of the war which Britain had so narrowly won. In later years, it became a by-word for the stiff-upper-lip war drama which seemed out of date and the brilliant realism and integrity of the film was forgotten. But looked at today, The Cruel Sea seems like one of Ealing's most enduring dramatic achievements and an influential film in the genre. The Cruel Sea is the story of a ship, a Flower Class corvette convoy vessel called the Compass Rose. It is led by a merchant seaman, Ericson (Hawkins), and his officers Lockhart (Sinden), Morell (Elliott) and Ferraby (Stratton). We follow them through the war as they rescue survivors of U-Boat attacks, wait for battle and suffer terrible losses.
A good measure of the success of the film is due to Jack Hawkins, an actor who never got his due when he was alive and is still all too often forgotten when British films are discussed. The tragedy of his life is perhaps better known than much of his career, the throat cancer with which he was afflicted destroying his renowned voice and forcing him, for the sake of his career, to accept re-voicing by Charles Gray or Robert Rietty.
But I think Hawkins was one of the pivotal planks of British cinema during the 1950s and 1960s, moving effortlessly between realistic war drama, comedy thriller, tragedy and domestic cosiness. He had a glorious knack of suggesting intelligence and thoughtfulness and could either turn this to sympathetic characterisations or ambiguous ones, as in his General Allenby who plays such a vital role in Lean's Lawrence of Arabia. The Cruel Sea is one of the highlights of his career, giving a role which he had played countless times before in films such as Angels One Five - but he never played it better or with more principled intellect than he does here. He is an extraordinarily principled actor - he doesn't go soft on us or try to pretend that men in war are saints, and this is exemplified in the famous scene where he ploughs on through merchant seamen stranded in the ocean in order to depth-charge a U-Boat. This is horrific but we accept this from Hawkins because of his strength of character - and we even sympathise with him because he shows the moral price that such decisions exact on men in command.
Wikipedia closes - After close to three years of service, including one U-Boat almost certainly sunk, the Compass Rose is herself torpedoed and her men forced to abandon ship. Ericson survives this ordeal along with his First Lieutenant, Lockhart (Donald Sinden), although most of the crew do not.
Together with his now-promoted 'number one', Ericson takes command of a new ship, HMS Saltash Castle, and they continue the monotonous, but vital duty of convoy escort. Late in the war, they sink one German submarine, the Saltash Castle's only 'kill'. As the war ends, the ship is shown returning to port, guarded by several German submarines after her surrender. With the exhaustion brought on by so many years of almost endless seagoing struggle, Ericson concedes at the film's end that the only victor is the 'Cruel Sea'.

In 1891, the triumphant news of the victory at Concordia hits the newspapers across the country, further encouraging the Union cause. In Topeka, Kansas, though, the mood is glum. "Sockless" Jerry Simpson meets with the Farmers Council to discuss their next move. "We should bargain with 'em," Councilor Thaddeus Elridge says. "They lost over 2000 men at Concordia. They'll be willing to give us good terms if it means ain't as many of them got to die. 'Sides, what do we really want, now? All we really need is our sovereignty; ain't like we're going to call for the restoration of President Cleveland anymore, is it?" | Author |

He looked pointedly at Simpson as he said this, and the Socrates of the plains felt the sting of the rebuke. He stood to reply, and strode around the chamber looking at each of his colleagues. "It's true that we can no longer demand that particular injustice be corrected. But, my friends, is all that we stand for power in this state? Are our lofty ideals something that we can just shuck aside as long as we remain in charge here? My friends, we began this crusade in order to right the deep wrongs in this country. We are Americans. And, as Americans, it is our duty to take whatever measures are necessary to ensure that our great nation travels along the path of righteousness. Do you think it is traveling along that path now?" There are murmured nos from the council. "Do you think that, if we let them pull victory from this grave defeat that our conflict represents, that they will change course?" The nos grow a little louder, and so does Simpson. "Do you think that, if they win here, they will see any path other than their own as the correct one to take?" The nos are now overwhelming. "Then, my friends, we must commit ourselves to a hard struggle, a long struggle, one we may not win... but one in which we will stand alongside the angels, and they will stand along the path of damnation. And God will see us through, gentlemen. God will see us through". Thunderous applause shakes the legislative chamber as Simpson smirks slightly at the few councilors who still stand against him. |

In 1939, German medievalist and a Obersturmfuhrer of the SS Otto Wilhelm Rahn died on a mountainside near Soll (Kufstein, Tyrol) in Austria.Raiders of the Holy Grail
From an early age, Rahn had been interested in the legends of the Holy Grail. While attending the University of Giessen he was inspired by his professor Baron Von Gall to study the Albigensian (Catharism) movement, and the massacre that occurred at Montsegur. It was Von Gall that told Rahn that in the days prior to the fall of the fortress, several Cathars allegedly slipped through the French lines carrying away a mysterious 'treasure' with them. Le Tresor Cathar explained Von Gall was almost certainly the Holy Grail.
Recruited by Himmer, Rahn joined the very secretive Ahnenerbe SS, part of the Third Reich's plan to win the war by discovering a superweapon.
The Grail was a superweapon, but not as the Nazi's had intended. Rahn's horryifying death at the hands of angels-turned-wraiths was portrayed in the Indiana Jones movie Raiders of the Holy Grail.
