Editor says, what if the "Jamaica Bay" Hurricane had catapaulted New York Mayor Lindsay to national prominence? In 1983, on this day former US President John V. Lindsay (pictured) was the master of ceremonies at an historic event to welcome the arrival of the Apollo XX spacecraft at the USS Intrepid floating Sea-Air-Space museum moored in New York Harbour.
Legacy
by Ed, Chris Oakley and Eric LippsDuring his two-term Presidency, the former New York Mayor had come under intense pressure from his fellow Liberal Republicans who sought to divert funding towards much needed social programmes. But Lindsay was a strong believer in the value of infrastructure, consistently demonstrating bipartisan leadership from the front. And of course his outlook had been fixed during the painstaking rebuilding of the City that had been necessary after the Jamaica Bay hurricane hit New York in 1960.
Ironically, as events turned out, his promotion of space platforms led to a development of weather prediction capabilities that would prevent another category four hurricane striking an unprepared US City. It was a legacy that he was proud to honour on this remarkable day in the summer of 1983.

~ Or at least its delay; I'm not sure it would have been avoided by a Lindsay presidency. And I suspect he wouldn't have made it through two terms; hs own party would have shivved him in 1972, especially if anything went wrong for the U.S. during that period.

On this day Soviet engineers, suspicious that the American Moon landing might be a put-on, pointed dish antennae at Earth's natural satellite to see if that was indeed where the radio and television transmissions were coming from. It was.
~ The social programs were "Danegeld" to calm down the "long hot summers" of urban riots. Did those happen in this TL?

They were indeed. But then "Tricky Dickie" was a very canny poliitical operator and knew how to buy off problems. if they donn't there are serious political ptoblems, no less in New York itself.
~ Somone in the Politburo decides to get tough. It is made public that the transmissions are coming from a studion on an old airbase 200 miles west of Houlston. But of course a counter-propaganda campaign would be organised............
~ I thought they were supposed to film the thing in Arizona? Anywho, the transmissions came from the Moon. Any amature radio operator could confirm it.
~ I'm sorry there's no evidence of "transmissions" from the moon but a lot of very highly disturbing evidence of a confidence trick.
