On this day in 1935, NBA legend Sandy Koufax was born in Brooklyn, New York.

Although he played for a neighborhood baseball team as a boy and was on his college's varsity baseball club, basketball was his first love; he joined the Boston Celtics in 1955 and went on to play a major role in their run of nine consecutive NBA league championships between 1958 and 1967.

In 1956 Sandy Koufax gave his first extended TV interview, speaking to a sports commentator from Boston's CBS affiliate WNAC. He spoke at length about his childhood, his efforts to reconcile his Jewish faith with his NBA career, and his decision to sign with the Celtics a year earlier after meeting with Celtics head coach and fellow Brooklynite Red Auerbach.

On this day in 1956, Sandy Koufax scored a then-NBA record of 63 points in his first playoff game as the Boston Celtics rolled to a 126-102 blowout of the Syracuse Nationals in the first game of the 1956 NBA Eastern Division semi-finals. Koufaxs single-game record would stand until 1986, when Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls scored 65 in the fourth and final game of a Celtics second-round sweep of the Bulls.

On this day in 1956, Sandy Koufax's first NBA playoff run came to an abrupt and highly painful end when he sprained his leg during the second quarter of Game 2 against the Philadelphia Warriors in the 1956 Eastern Division finals. With one of their top scorers out of commission for Game 3, the Celtics fell into a deep hole from which they couldn't pull out; they wound up losing the series to Philadelphia three games to two.

On this day in 1957, the injury bug bit Sandy Koufax again as he went down with a broken second finger on his right hand during the 3rd quarter of Game 1 of the 1957 NBA league championship series. The Celtics ended up losing that game in double overtime to the St. Louis Hawks 129-124 and would end up losing the series in six games.
