In 2015, scientists determine that life force consciousness is an electrical phenomena that ceases at the moment of discorporation.
Party WorldAny existence thereafter is certain to be non-sentient limited to chemical participation as a component.
Needless to say this sobering revelation transforms philosophy and religion across the world. The human population quickly descends into anarchic hedonism right up until the moment when the science is proven to be wonky. Ill-disciplined test methods are blamed for the mistake.

~ Would Pascal's Wager have any effect in restoring order to the hedonistic chaos? :-D
~ In 2017 it is discovered that all human beings, no matter their thoughts, deeds, or beliefs, go to hell. In 2021 it is then discovered that all people, after spending exactly one hundred years in hell, are purified and go to heaven forever. Surprisingly, neither discovery has much effect on the behavior of most people.
~ You assume that people are good because they want to go to heaven. What about us atheists? Some of us manage to behave ourselves.
~ Some serious proof of a hereafter would help either way. When people die, it is a good thing to have for dealing with the loss, however.
But, some party on regardless...
~ The question is, could the electrical phenomena be continued artificially? If so, immortality (for those who can afford it).
~ 99.9 percent of the world would refuse to believe it, regardless of the evidence.
